Winding River Through Striped Hills – Shin Bijutsukai Canvas Print
Included in *Shin Bijutsukai* (新美術海), the Kyoto design periodical guided by Furuya Kōrin through Unsōdō's presses in the early 1900s, this plate transforms a landscape into pure abstraction: green hillocks dotted with slender black pine trees roll across a ground of horizontal tan-and-brown stripes standing in for sky or mist, while a pale grey river winds diagonally through the central bands. The design's flattened, near-cartographic rendering of terrain — conveying distance and depth through color blocking rather than perspective — anticipates mid-century modern landscape graphics by decades, giving it an unexpectedly contemporary feel among the more traditionally ornamental plates in the series. It suits interiors seeking a nod to nature without literal representation: a study, office, or reading nook that benefits from calm, earth-toned structure. Offered as a canvas print with crisp striping and well-defined color separation in a smooth, gallery-quality finish, this piece will appeal to collectors drawn to stylized landscape design, riverine motifs, or the quieter, map-like compositions that occasionally appear within the broader *Shin Bijutsukai* portfolio.
