Karajishi and Peony on Vermilion – Shin Bijutsukai Canvas Print
This vibrant plate is part of *Shin Bijutsukai* (新美術海), the influential Kyoto pattern anthology compiled under Furuya Kōrin and published by Unsōdō between 1902 and 1906. Serpentine mythical creatures — depicted in teal, plum, and taupe with dragon-like curling limbs — wind across a saturated vermilion ground, interspersed with full-blown peony blossoms in blue and violet, echoing the classic *karajishi* (Chinese-lion) and peony pairing long favored in Japanese textile and lacquerware design. The nearly fluorescent orange-red background pushes this piece firmly into maximalist territory, making it a natural focal point rather than a subtle accent. It works beautifully in bold interiors already built around saturated color — a jewel-toned study, a dramatic hallway, or a gallery wall centered on statement art rather than quiet neutrals. Produced as a canvas print with rich, saturated color fidelity and a smooth, gallery-quality finish, this piece appeals to those who appreciate mythological creatures, peony symbolism, and the theatrical red grounds long associated with festival textiles and ceremonial robes. A bold pick for anyone curating a collection around the more dramatic, narrative-rich side of the *Shin Bijutsukai* portfolio.
