Patchwork Fragments on Striped Ground – Shin Bijutsukai Canvas Print
Featured in *Shin Bijutsukai* (新美術海), the Kyoto design anthology compiled by Furuya Kōrin and printed by Unsōdō in the early 1900s, this plate mimics a collage of scattered fabric swatches — a winged yellow phoenix on jade, a floral brocade rendered in brown and cream, indigo-and-white folk patterns, and a fragment featuring a single kanji character — scattered across a green-and-white striped backdrop punctuated by small paisley-like medallions. Working almost like a sampler of Meiji-period textile motifs rather than one unified design, this plate provides a compact overview of fabric aesthetics from the era, spanning folk indigo dyeing to gilded brocade craftsmanship. Its scrapbook-like character suits eclectic, maximalist interiors or spaces already layered with vintage textiles and curiosities, where dense visual detail feels at home rather than overwhelming. Produced as a canvas print with accurate color separation and a polished, gallery-ready finish, this piece is especially suited to collectors interested in kimono textile history, mixed-motif design, or the more playful, sampler-style plates occasionally found within the *Shin Bijutsukai* series.
