Cherry Petals Drifting on a Spiral Current – Shin Bijutsukai Canvas Print
Included in *Shin Bijutsukai* (新美術海), the design compendium edited by Furuya Kōrin and produced through Kyoto's Unsōdō house in the early 1900s, this plate portrays a swirling water eddy captured in delicate flowing linework, its spiral current shaded in soft green and peach tones, across which small cherry blossom petals scatter and drift — some caught in the pull of the current, others floating free in the open space above. This composition captures a beloved classical motif in Japanese art: *rakka ryūsui* (falling blossoms on flowing water), a symbol of transience and the passage of spring long celebrated in poetry and painting alike. The whirlpool's hypnotic linework plays beautifully against the light scatter of petals, giving the piece a sense of quiet motion despite its stillness — well suited to a reading nook, hallway, or any space seeking understated seasonal poetry. Produced as a canvas print with fine linework and soft watercolor-like shading in a refined, gallery-quality finish, this piece will appeal to collectors drawn to classical Japanese nature motifs, water-and-blossom imagery, or the most lyrical, painterly plates within the *Shin Bijutsukai* series.
