Autumn Umbrella and Maple Leaves on Black Kimono – Shin Bijutsukai Canvas Print
Taken from *Shin Bijutsukai* (新美術海), the design compendium edited by Furuya Kōrin and produced by Kyoto's Unsōdō house in the early 1900s, this plate portrays the hem detail of a black kimono: an open bamboo-ribbed parasol rendered in soft peach and cream sits at the base, surrounded by vivid red maple leaves, while diagonal dotted-line trails in white and pale teal cut across the black fabric like streaks of rain or wind. The composition conveys a distinctly Japanese seasonal sensibility — pairing autumn maple leaves (momiji) with a parasol against a void-black ground reflects the transient beauty (mono no aware) valued in kimono textile design, where a single asymmetric motif at the hem carries the full visual weight of the garment. Its deep black field and warm accent tones make it a striking focal piece for interiors seeking refined seasonal drama. Produced as a canvas print with rich black saturation and delicate leaf detailing in a smooth, gallery-quality finish, this piece will appeal to collectors drawn to kimono textile design, autumn motifs, or the more fashion-adjacent plates within the *Shin Bijutsukai* series.
