Lion and a Book | Edward Penfield
Discover Our Framed Animal Prints Collection
This charming framed wall art features "Lion and a Book," a captivating 1894 vintage illustration by Edward Penfield, celebrated as the father of the American poster movement. Breaking away from traditional wildlife art, the piece features a stylized lion standing upright in a surprisingly human-like posture, deeply engrossed in an open book. To the side, a small, curious calf or young deer looks onward, adding a layer of narrative mystery to the scene. Penfield’s hallmark style shines through with bold, clean ink outlines, minimalist shading, and a sophisticated, earthy color palette dominated by warm khakis, muted beiges, and rich tans. Set in a high-quality frame, this print beautifully celebrates the graphic simplicity and Japanese woodblock influences that defined late-19th-century American design.
There is a wonderfully witty, intellectual charm laced within this artwork. It effortlessly blends the majesty of the animal kingdom with the quiet, scholarly world of literature, striking a perfect balance between surrealism and cozy nostalgia. The calm, thoughtful expression of the reading lion casts a peaceful and grounding energy across the room, celebrating the quiet joy of enlightenment and reading. It wraps your space in a warm, lighthearted atmosphere that feels both classically elegant and delightfully eccentric.
This piece is an exceptional find for book lovers, writers, librarians, and anyone building a "dark academia" or vintage-inspired aesthetic. It makes a clever, sophisticated statement above a desk in a home office, acts as a cozy conversation starter on a library or study bookshelf, or adds a touch of playful character to a living room reading nook. Its neutral, organic tones allow it to seamlessly complement rustic, minimalist, or eclectic bohemian interiors.

A white border provides an unprinted margin around your image, creating a clean, framed appearance that mimics professional matting found in galleries and museums. This added space helps the eye settle on the art piece, enhances contrast with the surrounding wall or frame, and gives the piece a more polished, intentional presentation.
Including a border will reduce the visible area of the printed image slightly, since some of the art sits behind the unprinted edge, but the overall paper or sheet size remains the same. That means you retain standard dimensions for framing or display while achieving a restrained, elegant look. For anyone aiming for a minimalist, museum-quality aesthetic—whether for home décor, professional portfolios, or gallery displays—a white border is a simple, effective way to elevate the presentation.
