Banded Oak Leaf Arabesque – Shin Bijutsukai Framed Art Print
Drawn from *Shin Bijutsukai* (新美術海), the influential Kyoto pattern journal produced under Furuya Kōrin's editorship for the Unsōdō publishing house in the early 1900s, this design alternates horizontal bands of pale ivory and deep sepia, each populated by curling oak-leaf sprays and tendril-like scrollwork. The two-tone striping gives an otherwise organic motif a structured, almost architectural rhythm. Unlike freer botanical plates in the same series, this one leans into repetition and contrast: light leaves float across dark bands while dark leaves anchor the pale ones, creating a push-pull visual effect reminiscent of woven brocade. It would sit comfortably in a study or library setting, especially alongside leather-bound volumes, tortoiseshell accents, or aged parchment tones. The print is finished for framing with crisp registration and a refined, exhibition-ready surface.
